Walkout Basement Design
One of the most functional basement design is the walkout basement. This is just like a regular room except that it is slanted to make room for a door. This door can lead directly to the yard or patio. With this type of basement you will have more opportunities to make it a spare bedroom or to rent it out to anyone. With the light coming in you will also help to keep mold from growing in what used to be a damp, dark room.
The first thing you need to work on is the entrance and stairs leading to the room. In most homes the stairs will be placed directly in the middle of the basement. This is ok if you have such a large basement that you can create one or two rooms off of the ‘hall’ surrounding the stairs. However, most people prefer to plan the new design with the entrance on the sides to save up floor space.
It does not make sense to have a door in the room – but no windows. With this design you have more room to bring in natural light. Try to add one or two windows on either side of the door. The more light you have the cleaner it will be and the better it will look.
You should always know what the basement will be used for before you decide to finish the floor plan for it. Would you like to add an extra bedroom, use it for storage, or create a game room? This will help you to know if you should add any special features at different points of the basement.
Some people have such large basements that they are able to add a bedroom along with a bathroom or laundry room. Make sure you decide what you want before you finish. Trying to add in that much plumbing and electricity is a lot of work and best done the first time around.
